Why Wanting Something Feels Dangerous (And What the Trauma Triangle Has to Do With It)

There’s a specific kind of stuck that a lot of empaths and healers know well. You want something. Maybe it’s money, maybe it’s support, maybe it’s just permission to enjoy your own life without earning it first. But instead of moving toward it, you sit with the wanting. You hold it quietly, almost guiltily, like admitting you want it is the risky part. And somewhere underneath that quiet holding is a belief that wanting itself might be the problem.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not imagining the conditioning. It’s real, and it comes from more than one direction. Religious teaching has long treated desire, especially in women, as something to be suppressed. New age spirituality and law of attraction culture have their own version of the same message, just dressed differently. Either way, the result is the same. Desire gets hijacked into something forbidden, and you end up afraid of your own fire.

The stress underneath the stuckness
The episode names the mechanism directly using a framework it calls the trauma triangle: victim, perpetrator, rescuer. In any dysfunctional relationship, including the one you have with your own desire, those are the only three roles available. If you’re holding your wanting from the victim position, believing it’s impossible for you, that desire is bad, or that you’re powerless to create what you want, you stay stuck. You can want something for years from that spot and never receive it, because the position itself keeps you waiting to be rescued instead of moving.

This reframes something a lot of people miss. It’s not always that you don’t want enough, or don’t believe enough, or haven’t manifested correctly. Sometimes it’s simply that you’re wanting from powerlessness, and powerlessness by definition doesn’t create.

What changes when you step off the trauma triangle
The alternative isn’t hustling harder toward what you want. It’s changing your relationship with power itself, starting with how you engage with your own desire. When you step off the triangle and start relating to your wanting as something you can create from rather than something you’re owed or denied, you’re tapping into what the episode calls life force, the actual creative energy behind desire.

That includes the parts of your wanting you’d rather not look at. The episode is direct about this: your shadow desires, the ones you feel ashamed of, aren’t separate from your life force. They’re still that same energy, just moving through fear or shame instead of trust. The invitation isn’t to act on every shadow desire. It’s to sit with it, get curious about what it’s actually showing you, instead of trying to control or hide it. What is it teaching you about yourself, or about the conditioning you inherited.

Pleasure isn’t the distraction, it’s the point
Most of us have absorbed the idea that pleasure is bad, or at best a guilty indulgence you have to justify. The episode pushes back on that directly, asking what changes if pleasure and full embodied enjoyment aren’t a detour from spiritual life, but actually the reason you’re here in a body at all.

That reframe matters because it removes the shame layer that keeps so many people stuck on the victim point of the triangle in the first place. If wanting pleasure, wanting support, wanting more than the bare minimum makes you selfish or spiritually behind, of course you’ll suppress it. But if desire is simply life force looking for a way to move and create, then wanting clearly isn’t a character flaw. It’s information.

Where this leaves you
None of this is about forcing positivity onto your desires or pretending the fear isn’t there. It’s about noticing which point of the triangle you’re standing on the next time you catch yourself wanting something and immediately shrinking from it. Are you waiting for permission, or are you willing to create from where you are?
What do you want that you’ve been afraid to say out loud, even to yourself? And which part of the triangle has been holding you back from it?
